Are people on Wall Street Stupid?

It's been a while since I created a blog. My last one was about the commercials in the Super Bowl. I haven't really had a topic that would require a lot of writing, so I have stuck to what I normally do, create and reply to threads on the message boards, mainly the Auto Racing boards.

The topic of interest to me today? The price of gas. I doubt I will find many people here who don't think the price is too high. As of this morning, the cheapest gas I can find is $3.59/Gallon. That is just rediculous. I read articles on CNNMoney.com saying that due to the weak dollar, investers are putting money into commodities like gas and oil as a hedge against inflation. I am not an economics expert, but this seems to be a really stupid way to think. Let's see, I am worried about inflation, so I am going to contribute to running up the price of gasoline. Now ordinary folks like myself have to spend more on gas, giving me less money to spend on other things. Well this is going to hurt the overall economy because I am not spending as much on stuff I don't really need as I used to so manufacturers and store owners will suffer. Additionally, to get products to the store, you need what? Trucks! Last I checked trucks use fuel to run them. Price goes up, well heck now it costs more to get stuff to the stores. You think retailers are just going to take a lower profit margin? Nope, the price of food and clothing, and other stuff will have to go up to cover this new expense. Prices go up, last time I checked that was called inflation. So much for that hedge against inflation. What really ticks me off? The value of the dollar has declined 10% in the last year, how much has oil gone up? Over 80%. The price of gas since September has gone up 58%, I don't know about the rest of you, but my last raise was nowhere near that.

The country is also in the middle of a housing crisis, with banks in trouble because they were stupid, and gave out loans to people they knew couldn't afford to pay. What does our government do? They bail out the banks. So my tax dollars are going to companies that took too big of a risk, yet this same government is doing nothing to help me. The Fed is considering another reduction to the prime rate. I pray this doesn't happen because that will just cause the dollar to decline further, which in turn will drive oil prices even higher. It's time for the government to intervene and lower the price of oil. I know that both of the democratic candidates say they will tax big oil for their windfall profits, I only believe one of them since the other voted to give the oil companies a tax break to begin with when they voted for Cheney's energy bill. Additional rant within a rant, To all Democrats, vote for Hillary. I am neither Dem nor Rep, I voted for Bush both times, this last time for the simple fact that Kerry was an idiot. I can't vote for Obama, and do not want to vote another Republican into the White House.

It's got to stop somewhere. I would buy one of those scooters that gets 70+ mpg if it weren't for the fact that people don't know how to drive nowadays, and I have something against being a speedbump. Riding a bike wouldn't work either, to get to where I work, I go up and down a bunch of very steep hills. I would be too exhausted to actually work.

OK, I guess that's enough from me, let me know what you think. Is my thinking way off here? Any economics professors out there who want to tear apart my arguement feel free.

Super Bowl Ads

OK, so the top 10 list is out from USAToday.com. Below is a list of what viewers voted as the top 10 Ads. In my opinion, this years ads were sub-par at best. The game was great, and my congrats go out to the Giants and their fans. Below the official Top10 list, is my Top10 list. Try as a might, I could only come up with 5 commercials that I really liked.

1. Budweiser - Dog trains Clydesdale
2. FedEx - Homing Pigeons
3. Bridgestone - Critters screaming at oncoming car
4. Doritos - Mouse goes for entire bag
5. Bud Lite - Bud Lite comes with fire breathing ability
6. Bud Lite - Hidden Bud bottles at wine and cheese party
7. Coca Cola - Battling Parade Balloons
8. Diet Pepsi Max - People wake up after drinking Max
9. Planters - Men find unattractive women alluring
10. Tide - Talking stain

My top 10 doesn't quite look like that

1. FedEx - Homing Pigeons, this one cracked me up
2. Bud Lite - Caveman invents wheel to get rock cooler to party. Best lines "Wheel Suck!", and "Bottle Opener Suck!"
3. Ads for the Daytona 500
4. Coca Cola - Battling Parade Balloons.
5. There is no number 5, the rest of the commercials kinda stunk.
6. See #5
7. See #5
8. See #5
9. See #5
10. See # 5

Opinions on the boards here

OK, I guess for my first official blog I will spout off about these boards in general. I know many people have their own personal pet peeves about these boards, but for the most part I really enjoy my time here. Occasionally you run into an individual whose sole purpose in life is to act like an idiot. You have a few option when dealing with individuals like this. You can lose it with them, but this usually ends up bad for you since the guy causing trouble will just create another screen name if he gets banned because they don't care. You can ignore them, and they will most likely go away eventually. Or the final option, the one I choose to use is to use logic when replying to them, while at the same time choosing your words carefully so that they look more stupid than their post show. A way these boards could help with this would be give us the ability to ignore posters. We can add people to our favorites, so we know when they post, why not give us the ability to not even see the posts by these individuals.

Another troublesome item on these boards is the fact that if you rate a post high, it gets adjusted to half the value you wanted to give. If I wanted to give someone 2.5 stars, I would do that, if I choose 5 stars, then my rating should be  starts. I rarely give out 0's, if I don't like a post I will reply and give my opinion which lets the person know what I thought just as much as a 0 would.

Are there other issues, sure. I hate when you copy and paste information, the post comes out with all sorts of html coding, thus making the post virtually unreadable.

I haven't played with all of the new functionality, still not sure what the permalink is designed to accomplish, but I'm sure I will figure it out.

I am glad we finally have the chance to post blogs. That has been listed as coming soon for close to a year now. I am also glad they give the option to the All-Stars as well because all to often a troll will rile someone up enough that they can give a bogus warning to the person knocking them down from SuperStar. While it is nice to see the top 1k icon on my profile, as I am sure the people in the top 100 or top 10 like it as well. I would like to see just how close I am to the top 100, so if anyone knows how I can get this information please pass it along. If I lost the icon, I wouldn't care too much, even if I get knocked back to all-star doesn't bother me. I have said many a time that I want to be able to post here, and upload my own av. Everything else is just not that important.

Well that's about it for my first blog, not sure how often I will create these, I guess if I have something long-winded to say I will use this forum. Usually, I use postings since I don't have that much to say.
